Antoni Gaudí’s famous masterpieces cannot be fully understood unless you know Count Eusebi Güell and his close relationship with Gaudí and the hidden gems that the architect designed for him. The charming and little-known village of Colonia Güell impresses with its charm and peace, where you can stroll and admire the unique and beautiful modernist buildings created by the famous architects of the time. They still preserve their heritage, as designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1890 to house the workers of the Güell textile company in Barcelona at a time of social instability.
Eusebi Güell built the whole village near Barcelona for his business. Colonia Güell was mainly a textile factory, but its surroundings also included a theater, a convent, houses for workers, for the teacher and a doctor, who allegedly paid attention to whether the employees were really sick.
But the jewell of this place is Gaudí’s church. However, the church is not finished, Gaudí managed to finish only the ground floor.
As Gaudí himself said, if completed, it would be a “monumental model of the Sagrada Familia”. Gaudí’s laboratory, where he experimented with innovations, which he would later apply to the Sagrada Familia.
La Colònia Güell is one of the most avant-garde industrial districts of the 19th century, located in the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, only 12 km from Barcelona city, which at the beginning of the century caused a revolution in the country’s industrial structure with its architecture.
