Sitges: The painter and writer Santiago Rusiñol, in love with light and beaches, settled in Sitges in 1891. Cau Ferrat, his studio house turned into a museum, soon became a refuge for modernist and avant-garde artists from all over Europe. Its festivals, exhibitions and performances transformed the small “vila” of farmers and fishermen into a bohemian tourist destination.
From the beaches, the imposing picture, so often painted, of the church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla and its bell tower (from the 17th century, although later reconstructed) stand out. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1962). Walking through the narrow streets of the Baluard hill, in the famous “racó de la calma”, we will visit the Cau Ferrat museum (with paintings by Rusiñol, Casas, Nonell, Picasso and two works by El Greco); the Palacio Maricel (a building from the beginning of the 20th century); and the Maricel museum (an old hospital built on top of the cliffs with a large collection of medieval art). The spirit of the first artists remains in the festive and tolerant character of their inhabitants. Two celebrations stand out: the Carnival and the International Film Festival of Catalonia. A few minutes from Barcelona, Sitges offers a place for inspiration.
